During the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant issued an order to expel all Jews from his war zone. Dr. Jonathan Sarna, the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University and chief historian of the new National Museum of American Jewish History, will explore how the repercussions of this order influenced Grant’s subsequent presidency and the American Jews of his day.

Dr. Sarna is the author of The American Jewish Experience and American Judaism: A History, among many other books. He was Chief Historian for the 350th commemoration of the American Jewish community and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This lecture is made possible by a grant from the Celebrate 350: Jewish Life in America Foundation, which commemorates the 1654 establishment in New Amsterdam of the first Jewish community in North America.
