Deborah Lipstadt to speak at Viterbo in Wisconsin
Deborah Lipstadt of Emory University will speak at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, March 17.
She will speak to teachers attending our fifth Holocaust Educators’ Workshop, and due to the importance of her topic, we are opening it to the public for a free talk. Her book “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier,” is the story of her libel trial against David Irving, who sued her for calling him a Holocaust denier.
Her legal battle, at the cost of $1.5 million, lasted five years, and the judge found Irving to be a Holocaust denier, a falsifier of history, a racist and a liar.
She will speak again at 7 p.m. March 17, also at no charge, about her new book “The Eichmann Trial,” being released March 15.
As the “Jewish specialist” of the SS, Adolf Eichmann efficiently organized the arrest and transportation of millions of Jews to death and concentration camps.
After the war, he hid in Argentina, where he was seized by Israeli agents in 1960 and brought to trial in Israel. Not only did the trial establish his guilt, but it brought details of the Holocaust to the forefront, which encouraged survivors to speak about their experiences and schools to begin to teach about it.
